Date: Sunday 8 June + Sunday 15 June
Where: Castlemaine Community House
Instructor: Self-Reflection Conversations

A two-day facilitated conversation inviting non-Indigenous people to reflect on privilege, allyship and structural racism. Together we’ll explore themes from our understanding of shared histories and significant events for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to discussing how to walk together in solidarity.

These sessions are facilitated by local non-Indigenous people and been created in conversation with Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation.

To work in effective allyship, non-Indigenous people need to reflect on our understanding and attitude surrounding significant events impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and our own beliefs and values – privilege, structural racism and cultural bias.

It is only when we have some knowledge and critique of the dominant culture, and our own ingrained and often unacknowledged privileges that we can go with open hearts and minds to find ways to work with and support First Nations people.

What to expect

The content of the sessions is adaptable to the needs, knowledge and experience of participants but will move through:

1. Motivations and history – the participant’s understanding of our shared histories and significant events for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people since colonisation.
2. Local knowledge and culture – participant’s understanding of their own cultures, and events and interactions with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
3. Mainstream/dominant culture, white privilege, racism, reconciliation and decolonisation.
4. Allyship and Action – common challenges, next steps, and how to walk together in solidarity.

Cost

The cost for participation is on a self-selecting sliding scale and we don’t want to exclude anyone. The highest price points also allow subsidisation for the lowest. This is a not-for-profit initiative. Facilitators and room hire will be paid, 15% towards a First Nations lead initiative, and any remaining income will go to future learning and training opportunities in anti-racism work and/or for First Nations people, as they become available or are requested.

Please Note

  • This is not cultural awareness training – that work needs to be held by First Nations people.
  • It is a space for deeply self-reflective conversations, held for and by non-First Nations people. We all have things to contribute and learn – the content is therefore constantly being adapted and refined.
  • The content and facilitators are approved by and accountable to Nalderun First Nations Staff and Directors
  • These conversations are held as a space of shared and ongoing learning and informed by those in the room. Facilitators are not experts, we make mistakes, welcome critique, and are constantly learning, connecting with others doing this work in other ways (including First Nations people).
  • This work is challenging and we hope that people will get to places that are unsettling that’s when the real learning happens.
  • Nalderun CEO and Yorta Yorta educator Kath Coff will often pop in and join us for a session.
